Rules & Procedures

  1. No gum or candy allowed in class!
    1. Over time this will cause damage to your instrument.
    2. No gum or candy in class is also a school rule.
  1. No sharing, touching or hiding of another student’s instrument or music.
    1. Hiding of another student’s instrument is considered theft and will result in suspension and removal from the band program.  If the instrument is not recovered the police will be notified.
  1. Students are responsible for the organization and care of their band music.
    1. If a student is missing music before a performance a letter grade will be deducted from the student’s quarterly grade.
    2. At anytime throughout the quarter a student may ask Mr. C for a new copy of any missing piece of music.
    3. Students are required to bring their own music to class every day.  Last year people would rely on other students to bring their music to class as many of you know is they were absent this left you without music.  Please bring your own music to class every day!
  1. Students are expected to get their instruments from the instrument closet and go directly to their seats.
    1. Students have seven minutes from the time the bell rings to report to their seats.
    2. Students will receive one warning and then their parents will be notified.
    3. Excessive fooling around before of after a rehearsal is not acceptable and will not be tolerated.
    4. If this becomes a reoccurring problem with any student they will be removed from the band program.
  1. Talking while the ensemble is working on a piece or exercise cannot be tolerated.  Remember a band is a team “One band, one sound”.  If we are going to be successful your best work is required.
    1. Students will receive one verbal warning, as second warning will result in a note home, a third warning will result in a phone call home, and finally if necessary the students will be removed from the band program.
  1. Nurse, Bathroom, and General Attendance
    1. If a student finds in necessary to go to the nurse due to sickness they must first ask Mr. C and then call the nurses office from the classroom phone to see if she will accept them.
    2.  Students are asked to go to the bathroom on their way down band or on their way to their next class.  Students are given ample time at the beginning and ending of each class to use the bathroom if necessary.  If there is an emergency the students is expected to use the bathroom sign out sheet.
    3. Class participation is the biggest portion of your band grade forgetting your instrument two or more times in a quarter will result in a failing grade.  If you are sick you must have a note from your parents or follow the nurse procedure as stated above.
  1. Instrument repair procedures
    1. If you rent your instrument from Rick’s or Robert’s music and it is broken.  Please write a note stating the problem put it in the case a place your instrument outside of Mr. C’s office.  Rick or Rob will either fix it at the school or will take your instrument for repair.
    2. If you own your instrument and it becomes broken.  Let Mr. C know of your problem and he will take a look at it.  If you instrument cannot be repaired you will need to make arrangements with a repair technician and have your instrument repaired.  Contacting a repair technician is your responsibility.
    3. Last year there were many issues regarding students and having their instruments repaired. This year it will be at Mr. C’s discretion as to if a student shall remain in class while their instrument is being repaired or if a student shall report to the learning center until their instrument is repaired. 
    4. Any student who does not have their instrument within 10 days of it breaking will receive a “U” grade for the quarter. If the repair is going to take longer than 10 days a note from the repair technician will be accepted as an excuse.
  1. Students are responsible for the care and treatment of their instrument.
    1. In most cases your parents invest a large amount of money by renting your instrument. Take care of it!  Put it in the closets at the end of class.
    2. Mr. C and Burrillville Middle School are not responsible for instruments:
  1. Left on the stage. (or in the stage closet)
  2. Left in the halls.
  3. Left in an open classroom. (including the band room)
  4. Left on the bus.
  5. Left in the auditorium or gymnasium.
  6. Damaged by your son/daughter to their instrument.
  7. Books, reeds, mouthpieces etc. that left in the closets or instrument cases.
